About This Ground

Wolcott is the name given by charter captain Jay Porter to an unidentified wooden schooner lying in approximately 83 feet of water northeast of the USS San Diego wreck, reportedly named after Jersey Joe Wolcott's boxing title win over Joe Louis. The wreck has collapsed substantially — large wooden ribs are mostly buried, with a large fluted anchor visible among the scattered debris field. The site is accessible from Sandy Hook and northern NJ ports on longer runs. Sea bass, tautog, and porgy are the primary targets on the bottom structure; bluefish and bonito work the surface above during summer. A productive but lesser-known stop included on some Highlands and Sandy Hook charter itineraries.
