Wreck Site off the New Jersey coast
The SS Oregon, a Cunard Line ocean liner that once held the Blue Riband as the Atlantic's fastest ship, sank March 14, 1886, after a schooner collision 18 miles off Fire Island. The 518-foot steel hull rests in 125–130 feet of water, with the massive triple-cylinder steam engine rising to 85 feet off the bottom. Over 140 years of open-ocean exposure have collapsed most of the hull into a broad debris field that now supports enormous populations of lobster, tautog, sea bass, and cod. The Oregon is one of the most historically significant wrecks in the NY/NJ area and produces excellent fishing throughout the season. Charter boats run overnight trips to reach her; current and depth make this an advanced destination.
