The offshore canyons accessible from New Jersey - Hudson, Wilmington, Baltimore, Poor Man's, and others - represent some of the most productive big-game fishing waters in the Atlantic. With 225 documented grounds including canyon edges, temperature breaks, and legendary hotspots, these waters attract serious offshore anglers from across the country.
The canyons are underwater valleys carved into the continental shelf edge, creating dramatic depth changes and upwellings that concentrate baitfish and the predators that follow. Water depths plunge from 100 feet to 1,000+ feet over short distances, creating the perfect conditions for pelagic species.

Hudson Canyon is 70-120 miles offshore depending on your departure port. Wilmington Canyon is 50-70 miles from Cape May. Poor Man's Canyon is 55-65 miles from southern ports. These are serious offshore trips requiring capable boats and careful planning.
Overnight trips are standard for canyon fishing. The long run, all-day fishing, and return trip typically span 24-36+ hours. Day trips are possible from Cape May to Wilmington Canyon during peak season, but overnights are more productive.
June through October is the primary canyon season. August and September are peak months with the best variety - yellowfin, bigeye, mahi, and marlin. Fall brings giant bluefin potential. Weather determines access more than fish presence.
A minimum 30-foot offshore-capable vessel is recommended, though 35-40+ feet is more comfortable for overnight trips. Twin engines, quality electronics, proper safety gear, and offshore experience are essential. Most anglers fish on charter boats.
Each canyon has different characteristics. Hudson is the largest and most famous but requires the longest runs. Wilmington offers the shortest runs from Cape May. Poor Man's is smaller but often productive. Water temperature, current, and bait presence matter more than specific location.
