Frequently Asked Questions

Is the NJ fishing license 2026 free?

The NJ Saltwater Recreational Registry is free for 2026, but freshwater fishing requires a paid license from NJ Fish & Wildlife starting at $22.50 for residents. The saltwater portion is free because New Jersey runs its own program β€” without it, anglers would owe a $34 federal NOAA registration fee.

How do I get a NJ fishing license online?

For saltwater, register at saltwaterregistry.nj.gov (5 minutes, free). For freshwater, buy a license at nj.gov/dep/fgw or through any authorized agent (tackle shops, marinas). Both processes are entirely online and provide an immediate confirmation you can save or print.

How do I renew my NJ saltwater fishing license?

Sign in at saltwaterregistry.nj.gov with your existing account and choose "Renew Registration." Renewal is free and valid through December 31 of the current year. See our detailed guide at /fishing/saltwater-registry/ for the renewal flow.

Do I need a license if I fish from a charter boat?

No. When you fish on a licensed New Jersey charter boat or party boat, the captain's commercial license covers all paying passengers. This applies to both saltwater registry and freshwater outings, and is one of the simplest reasons to book a charter for your first NJ trip.

Do I need a license to fish on the beach in NJ?

Yes β€” beach and surf fishing in NJ marine waters requires the free NJ Saltwater Recreational Registry. The registration is free and takes about 5 minutes online. Bring your confirmation number with you in case a conservation officer asks.

Do children need a fishing license in NJ?

For freshwater, children under 16 do not need a license. For saltwater, all ages are technically required to be in the registry, but enforcement against minors fishing recreationally is rare. Registration is free regardless of age.

What about freshwater fishing in NJ?

Freshwater fishing requires a separate paid license from NJ Fish & Wildlife. Prices start at $22.50 for NJ residents and $34.00 for non-residents. A 7-day vacation license is also available at $19.50 for visitors planning a single-trip lake outing.

Do I need a special permit for shark or tuna?

Yes β€” Highly Migratory Species (HMS) permits for sharks, tunas, swordfish, and billfish are issued separately by NOAA and are free. Most NJ charter boats already hold this permit; you only need your own if fishing from a private boat.

Is there a license for crabbing in NJ?

Recreational crabbing is included with your free NJ Saltwater Registry. No additional license is required. Standard size limits apply (4.5" minimum across the back) and catch is limited to 1 bushel per person per day.

How much is a NJ fishing license?

Saltwater registration is $0 (free). Freshwater licenses cost $22.50 (NJ resident annual), $34.00 (non-resident annual), $19.50 (7-day non-resident vacation), or $10.50 (trout stamp add-on). Senior and disabled-veteran rates are reduced.
