About This Ground

USS San Diego (ACR-6), a Pennsylvania-class armored cruiser, sank July 19, 1918, after striking a mine laid by German submarine U-156 — the only major U.S. warship lost in WWI. The 13,680-ton cruiser rests upside down in 110 feet of water, about 13.5 miles south of Fire Island, with the highest structure rising to 66 feet. Nicknamed the "Lobster Hotel" by divers for its extraordinary crustacean population, the wreck also holds outstanding black sea bass, tautog, and large baitfish schools year-round. Visibility typically runs 20–40 feet, making it one of the most diver- and angler-visited wrecks on the East Coast. Charter boats from Sandy Hook and northern NJ inlets reach the site in 2–3 hours.
