About This Ground

SS R.P. Resor, an American steam oil tanker built in 1936, was torpedoed by German submarine U-578 on February 28, 1942, and burned for two days before sinking in 125–130 feet, 31–34 miles offshore from Barnegat Inlet. Only 2 of 50 crew survived. The stern section rises 30–40 feet off the bottom, creating exceptional structure for sharks, tuna, and bottom fish. For decades the Resor carried a reputation as the top shark wreck on the Jersey coast — mako, thresher, and blue sharks work the site from May through October. Bluefin tuna run 40–300 lbs here in summer. Winter months bring tautog, cod, and pollock. Large lobsters inhabit the debris. The combination of depth, distance, and species diversity makes the Resor one of NJ's premier offshore fishing destinations.
