The middle Mussel Bottom ground, 474 acres of shell bed 7.3 nautical miles northeast of Shark River, bracketed by its two namesakes northeast and southwest. The broad shell bottom feeds fluke and sea bass all summer, with false albacore cutting across the top when rainfish arrive.
The surrounding area is characterized with a variety of sandy, mussels, gravel and rocky material as a bottom type.
