About This Ground

U-869, a German Type IXC/40 submarine, lies 60 miles off the New Jersey coast in 230 feet of water — one of the deepest and most historically significant shipwrecks in the region. Sunk in late 1944 or early 1945 — possibly by its own acoustic torpedo — U-869 carried all 56 crew to the bottom. Sport divers discovered the wreck in 1991 and dubbed it "U-Who" until naval historians confirmed its identity in 1997 through artifacts recovered by John Chatterton and Richie Kohler. The wreck now holds the remains of all 56 crewmen. At 230 feet, the site requires technical trimix diving and is not a recreational fishing destination, but the deep structure and surrounding offshore bottom attract tilefish and deepwater sea bass for long-range charter trips departing nearby NJ ports.
