About This Ground

Edward H. Cole, a four-masted sailing schooner 228 feet long, was sunk June 2, 1918 — "Black Sunday" — by German submarine U-151, the first U-boat to operate in U.S. waters in WWI. U-151 sank six vessels that single day off the New Jersey and Delaware coasts. The Cole went down at approximately 185 feet and is referenced in Gary Gentile's "Shipwrecks of New Jersey: South" as part of the productive "Triple Wrecks" cluster, specifically cited by The Fisherman magazine as a hot spot for deep-water bottom fishing. The grouped wreck structure provides habitat for sea bass, tautog, and deepwater species. Long-range charter boats from southern NJ ports include the Triple Wrecks area on offshore itineraries.
