About This Ground

M/S Bidevind, a Norwegian freighter approximately 414 feet long, was torpedoed April 30, 1942, by German submarine U-752 during the "Second Happy Time" campaign against Allied shipping along the U.S. East Coast. The wreck lies at approximately 190 feet, resting starboard side up with the hull spilled into a broad debris field. Two ship's bells engraved with the vessel's name have been recovered, and portholes serve as navigational landmarks for divers. The depth and distance offshore make Bidevind an infrequently-visited technical destination, but the deep-water structure below the wreck hosts tilefish, and offshore pelagic species including tuna and bluefish work the surrounding water column during summer and fall migrations.
