About This Ground

SS Rio Tercero, an Argentine cargo steamship launched in England in 1912, was torpedoed June 22, 1942, by German submarine U-202 approximately 120 nautical miles east of New York City. Originally named SS Eboe, she was renamed Rio Tercero after Argentine acquisition in 1941. Despite Argentina's neutrality in WWII, U-202 fired a spread of three torpedoes, one striking the starboard side and detonating a boiler, killing five crew. The ship sank slowly in deep outer continental shelf waters. The remote location — approximately 200+ feet — makes this a long-range technical destination, but the deep surrounding seafloor produces tilefish and offshore pelagic species during migration season. Most accessible from southern NJ offshore ports on extended-range trips.
