About This Ground

SS Ioannis P. Goulandris, a 362-foot Greek cargo ship built in 1910 for the Goulandris shipping family of Andros, Greece, sank in 1942 in the deep Mud Hole — the ancient submerged channel of the Hudson River off the NJ coast. The wreck lies at approximately 190 feet, making it one of the deeper accessible wrecks on the Manasquan/Shark River grounds. The IP Goulandris is widely regarded as a premier ling (cusk) destination in the region — the vessel's broken structure provides extensive hiding spots for large ling throughout the season. Heavily fished for decades, significant monofilament accumulation covers the wreck. Offshore charter boats from Shark River and Manasquan Inlet target the IP Goulandris specifically for ling during the fall bottom-fishing season.
