Hiking Tips for NJ State Parks

Best Seasons

Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer the best hiking conditions. Summer can be hot and buggy in the Pine Barrens. Winter hiking is excellent at coastal parks.

What to Bring

Carry water (no facilities on most trails), sunscreen, insect repellent, and a trail map. Wear sturdy footwear - some trails have sandy or uneven terrain.

Trail Types

Coastal parks feature dune boardwalks and beach paths. Pine Barrens trails wind through forests and along cedar-colored streams. Historic parks have interpretive trails.

Accessibility

Several parks offer accessible trails and boardwalks. Allaire and Belleplain have wheelchair-friendly paths. Check individual park pages for details.
