About This Ground

M/S Stolt Dagali, a 582-foot Norwegian chemical tanker, was cut in half by the Israeli ocean liner SS Shalom on Thanksgiving night, November 26, 1964, in thick fog 15.6 miles off Sea Girt. The stern section sank within seconds, killing 19 crew asleep in their bunks — a WWII-era pace. The stern now rests on its starboard side in 130 feet, with the top of the wreck at 60–65 feet, giving 65 feet of vertical relief — exceptional structure for NJ coastal waters. Sea bass and tautog hold tight to the hull year-round; ling (red hake), cod, pollock, and winter flounder fill out the catch in cooler months. Large lobsters inhabit the lower sections. The Stolt Dagali is accessible from smaller boats via Manasquan Inlet and is designated a Memorial Wreck by the NJ Coastal Diving Council.
