About Thunder Over the Waves

Thunder Over the Waves is Wildwood's premier aviation event โ€” a two-day free airshow held each September directly on the widest beach on the Jersey Shore. The 2025 debut was an immediate hit: 133,000 spectators showed up, generating an estimated $33.2 million in economic impact and establishing the show as one of New Jersey's largest free outdoor events.

Unlike the Atlantic City Soar & Shore Festival (held on Memorial Day Weekend), Thunder Over the Waves is a Wildwood event organized by the Greater Wildwood Tourism Improvement & Development Authority. The September timing means cooler temperatures, less summer-crowd intensity, and an off-peak travel window when hotel rates drop significantly from July peak.

The 2026 performer lineup will be announced in summer 2026. Check wildwoodsnj.com for updates.

Best Viewing Spots

Show Center Beach

Best

The beach directly in front of show center (near Morey's Piers) offers the most direct overhead views. Aircraft perform maneuvers right along this stretch.

Tip: Arrive by 8 AM for front-row spots. Bring chairs, umbrella, and a cooler.

Boardwalk

Excellent

Elevated viewing from the two-mile boardwalk. No need for beach gear, with easy access to food, drinks, and restrooms.

Tip: Good for those who want to stay mobile. The height gives a slightly different perspective on formation flying.

North Wildwood Beach

Good

Less crowded than show center. Aircraft still clearly visible at a slight angle. Better parking options nearby.

Tip: Great choice for families with young children who need more space.

Wildwood Crest

Good

South of show center, Wildwood Crest's quiet beaches offer a less crowded alternative with clear sightlines for the overhead portions of the show.

Tip: Easy parking, quieter atmosphere โ€” but you'll miss the show-center intensity.

Is Thunder Over the Waves the same as Thunder Over the Boardwalk?

No โ€” these are two different events. Thunder Over the Boardwalk was the Atlantic City airshow (now rebranded the Soar & Shore Festival, held on Memorial Day Weekend). Thunder Over the Waves is a separate Wildwood event that debuted in 2025 and is held in September.
