SUP Tips for Beginners

Start in Calm Water

Begin on flat water like bays or calm rivers. Ocean paddling requires experience - save that for after you're comfortable on the board.

Use a Leash

Always attach the ankle leash. A board can travel fast in wind or current - you don't want to swim after it.

Check Wind First

Wind over 10-12mph makes SUP challenging, especially for beginners. Paddle into the wind first so the return is easier.

Take a Lesson

A quick lesson from a local outfitter teaches proper technique and safety. Most shore towns have SUP rental shops offering lessons.

SUP Board Types

All-Around

Best for beginners. Wide, stable, handles various conditions. Most versatile choice for casual paddlers.

Touring

Longer, narrower for distance paddling. Better tracking and speed. Good for fitness-focused paddlers.

Yoga/Fitness

Extra wide deck for stability during yoga poses. Soft deck pad for comfort. Great for bay paddling.

Surf SUP

Shorter, more maneuverable for waves. Requires experience. Not recommended for beginners.

Paddleboarding Gear FAQs

Should I buy an inflatable or hardboard SUP?โ–ผ

Inflatable SUPs are ideal for most Jersey Shore paddlers - they're portable, easy to store, durable, and perform well in flat water. Hardboards offer slightly better performance but require roof racks and storage space. For bay paddling and casual use, inflatables are the practical choice.

What size paddleboard should I get?โ–ผ

Board size depends on your weight and skill level. Beginners should choose wider boards (32"+) for stability. For paddlers under 150lbs, a 10' board works well. 150-200lbs suits a 10'6"-11' board. Over 200lbs, consider 11'6"+ boards for adequate flotation.

Do I need a life jacket for paddleboarding in NJ?โ–ผ

Yes. Coast Guard regulations require a USCG-approved PFD when paddling beyond designated bathing areas. You don't have to wear it while on the board (adults), but it must be on board and easily accessible. A compact inflatable PFD works well for SUP.

What paddle length do I need for SUP?โ–ผ

Your paddle should be 8-10 inches taller than your height. Most adjustable SUP paddles cover a wide range. For a 5'10" paddler, set the paddle around 6'6"-6'8". Shorter for surfing, longer for racing or touring.

Where can I paddleboard at the Jersey Shore?โ–ผ

Best SUP spots include calm back bays (Barnegat Bay, Cape May), rivers (Navesink, Great Egg Harbor), and protected inlets. Ocean paddling requires experience and calm conditions. Many beaches allow SUP outside swim zones - check local rules.
