A bad beach chair turns a great shore day into a back-aching grumble by 2pm. We compared the six dominant chair styles across price, weight, packability, and the only metric that matters in NJ — does it carry well across soft sand without dislocating your shoulder.

Tested on the Long Branch promenade-to-beach walk, Cape May's low-tide flat at sunset, Sandy Hook's off-roader sand, and a long Saturday at Manasquan with three kids and a cooler.

Beach Chair Tips for the Jersey Shore

Sand vs Boardwalk

Cape May, Wildwood, Asbury, Belmar boardwalks favor tall and reclining chairs. Sandy Hook, IBSP, and most state-park beaches favor low slings or backpack chairs.

Wind & Spray

NJ ocean breezes can flip light chairs. Anchor with your cooler or stake the legs into wet sand. Skip umbrella tilt mode in 15+ mph onshore wind.

Salt and Care

Rinse with fresh water after each beach day. Salt and sand chew through pivot rivets. Aluminum frames last; steel rusts within a season at the shore.

Beach Tags

Most NJ municipal beaches require beach badges (not chairs). Confirm your town's rules — Belmar, Bradley Beach, Spring Lake, and Cape May enforce strictly.

FAQs

What's the difference between low-sling and backpack beach chairs?

Low-sling chairs sit 2–6 inches off the sand for low-profile lounging — great on packed sand at low tide. Backpack chairs fold into shoulder straps for hands-free hauling — great when you have a long walk to the water from the lot.

Are Tommy Bahama beach chairs worth it?

If you spend 4+ hours on the beach and can park within 200 feet of the sand, yes. The 5-position recline, cup holder, towel bar, and side pocket are real upgrades over a $25 chair. If you mostly do quick beach drops, save the money.

How much weight should a good beach chair hold?

Standard chairs are rated 250–300 lbs. Oversized chairs (Caravan Sports, Rio Beach Big) are 300+ lbs and have wider seats and reinforced legs. Read the rating before buying — sand stress amplifies weight on hinges.

Can beach chairs go in the dishwasher?

No. Rinse with a hose, scrub salt off the frame, and air-dry with the chair partially open. Dishwasher detergent strips the powder coating on aluminum frames.
