NJ summer waves are 1-3 ft. The 8-9 ft soft-top is right for that — anything shorter is fighting physics. Save shortboards for fall hurricane swell once you have skills.
Before you buy, take one lesson at Brave New World (Asbury), Eastern Lines (Belmar), or Aqua East (Cape May). $80-120 for a 2-hour group session with all gear. Test before investing.
8-9 ft boards don't fit in most cars. Roof rack ($100-200), foam blocks + tie-downs ($30), or a board sock that fits diagonally in an SUV. Plan storage before purchase.

Wavestorm. Cheaper, easier to find, more forgiving for absolute first-timers. Spend the $200, learn to pop up, then decide if you want to upgrade. South Bay is for year 2+, not day 1.
In NJ use: 2-3 seasons of regular surfing before water absorption and foam delamination set in. South Bay lasts 5+ seasons. If you surf 30+ days/year, the South Bay's longevity may justify the price gap.
Technically yes, but Wavestorm soft-tops aren't designed for the harder, cleaner winter swell. A hard-top epoxy board is more appropriate for sub-50°F water and 4+ ft waves. South Bay performs better in winter.
Used Wavestorm or used South Bay on Facebook Marketplace. Both come up regularly post-Labor Day at NJ shore. $100-150 gets you a board that's been gently used for 1-2 summers.
Wavestorm 7' is great for kids 8-14. South Bay Ruccus 7' or Catch Surf Beater 54 work for kids 6-12. Match to body weight, not age — bigger kids need more length to catch waves.
