Ocean City NJ Beaches
Eight miles of guarded family beaches, a dry-town boardwalk, and a perfect water-quality record.
- Daily tag$10
- Season tag$35
- Under 12Free
Ocean City is the Jersey Shore's family standard: eight miles of guarded sand, a boardwalk built around rides and ice cream instead of bars, and a dry-town rule that has held since 1879. The payoff shows up in the details — every NJDEP water-quality station in town currently rates excellent, and summer nights end at the Music Pier or Playland's Castaway Cove rather than last call.

Ocean City Beach FAQs
How much are Ocean City NJ beach tags in 2026?
$10 daily, $20 weekly, and $35 for the season (discounted to $30 if bought before June 1). Children under 12 are free, and active military and veterans get free tags with ID. Tags are required June through Labor Day for ages 12+.
Is the beach free in Ocean City NJ?
Outside of summer, yes — beach tags are only enforced from June through Labor Day. In season, everyone 12 and older needs a tag. If you want a free summer beach nearby, Wildwood (20 minutes south) and Atlantic City (20 minutes north) never charge.
Which Ocean City beach section is best?
The Main Beach along the central boardwalk is the classic choice — lifeguards, food, restrooms, and the Music Pier close by. The North End is the quieter, local-favorite stretch, and the southern end of the island trades crowds for space. All sections are guarded in season.
Can you drink alcohol on the beach in Ocean City?
No — and you can't buy it anywhere in town either. Ocean City has been dry since its founding in 1879, on the beach, the boardwalk, and in every restaurant (many are BYOB for dining, but not on the sand). It's central to the town's family-resort identity.
Is the water clean at Ocean City beaches?
Exceptionally. All 13 of NJDEP's Cooperative Coastal Monitoring Program stations on Ocean City's beachfront currently rate "excellent" based on five years of bacteria data — one of the few shore towns with a perfect current record. See our water quality tracker for station detail.
