Atlantic City Beaches

Free, wide, and running the length of the Boardwalk — the complete guide to AC's beaches.

Atlantic City flips the usual Jersey Shore equation: the casinos get the attention, and the wide, free beach below the Boardwalk stays surprisingly uncrowded. There's no badge checker anywhere on Absecon Island's AC stretch — you walk down any ramp and you're on the sand. Pair that with the Boardwalk's food, restrooms, and beach bars a few steps away, and it's one of the easiest beach days on the shore.

The free beaches continue down the island: Ventnor and Margate are quieter and equally badge-free for day visitors. Prefer a boardwalk-with-rides beach day? Ocean City is 20 minutes south.

Atlantic City Beach FAQs

Are Atlantic City beaches free?

Yes. Atlantic City beaches are completely free — no beach badge, tag, or fee is required at any time. That makes AC one of the few free beach destinations on the Jersey Shore, along with the Wildwoods and Sandy Hook (which charges for parking instead). Neighboring Ventnor and Margate are badge-free for daily visitors too.

Where is the best beach in Atlantic City?

The beach in front of the Boardwalk between the casino piers is the classic stretch — wide sand, easy food and restroom access, and often surprisingly uncrowded compared to the Boardwalk above it. For a quieter feel, walk south toward Ventnor; for people-watching and amusements, stay near Steel Pier.

Is the water clean at Atlantic City beaches?

NJDEP's Cooperative Coastal Monitoring Program samples 25 stations along Atlantic City's beachfront weekly in season, and 25 of 25 currently rate "good" or better based on five years of Enterococcus data. Check our beach water quality tracker for station-by-station current ratings.

Are there lifeguards on Atlantic City beaches?

Yes — the Atlantic City Beach Patrol guards designated bathing areas from Memorial Day through Labor Day during daytime hours. Swim only in guarded areas; the beach is open but unguarded outside the season.

Can you drink alcohol on the beach in Atlantic City?

Not on the open beach — alcohol is prohibited on Atlantic City beaches, as in nearly every NJ shore town. The licensed beach bars along the Boardwalk are the legal way to drink with your feet in the sand.
