Common Planning Mistakes
Accessible beach trips need extra planning. Avoid these pitfalls:
Not reserving the beach wheelchair in advance
Most beaches have 2-4 chairs total. You show up Saturday morning, they're all checked out. Trip ruined.
✓ Call the beach office 1-2 days ahead. Ask about reservation policy and pickup location. Have a backup beach.
Planning a beach day at high tide
Beach wheelchairs need firm, wet sand. High tide = soft, dry sand only. You can't get near the water.
✓ Check tide charts and plan for low tide. The 2-hour window around low tide is ideal for beach wheelchair access.
Assuming all ADA hotel rooms are equal
You booked "accessible" but the room has a tub, no roll-in shower. The bathroom door doesn't fit your chair.
✓ Call the hotel directly. Ask specific questions: roll-in shower? grab bars? turning radius? Door widths?
Not bringing shade gear because "we'll stay in the water"
Beach wheelchairs don't have umbrellas. You're exposed to full sun. Heat exhaustion risk is real.
✓ Bring a beach umbrella, pop-up shade, or tent. Position it where you'll be. Hydrate constantly.
