Accessible Parking

Understanding Beach Accessibility Features

🦽 Beach Wheelchairs (Mobi-Chairs)

Specialized wheelchairs with large balloon tires that roll easily on sand. Most are free to borrow but require reservation. Available at lifeguard stations or beach offices.

πŸ›€οΈ Mobi-Mats / Access Mats

Roll-out pathways that provide a firm surface from boardwalk or parking to the beach. Makes wheelchair and walker access possible on sand.

β™Ώ Accessible Parking

Designated ADA parking spaces near beach entrances. Some towns offer free or discounted parking for disabled placards. Arrive early as spots are limited.

🚻 Accessible Restrooms

ADA-compliant restrooms with grab bars, wide doors, and adequate space. Usually located in beach pavilions or comfort stations.

Tips for a Successful Beach Visit

  • β€’ Call ahead to reserve beach wheelchairsβ€”they're limited
  • β€’ Arrive early for best accessible parking spots
  • β€’ Check tide timesβ€”low tide offers more firm sand
  • β€’ Bring sun protectionβ€”beach wheelchairs offer no shade
  • β€’ Ask about beach badge exemptions for disabled visitors
  • β€’ Weekdays are less crowded and easier to navigate
  • β€’ Boardwalk dining is usually accessible at beach towns
  • β€’ Contact beach office with questions before your visit

Common Planning Mistakes

Accessible beach trips need extra planning. Avoid these pitfalls:

Not reserving the beach wheelchair in advance

Most beaches have 2-4 chairs total. You show up Saturday morning, they're all checked out. Trip ruined.

βœ“ Call the beach office 1-2 days ahead. Ask about reservation policy and pickup location. Have a backup beach.

Planning a beach day at high tide

Beach wheelchairs need firm, wet sand. High tide = soft, dry sand only. You can't get near the water.

βœ“ Check tide charts and plan for low tide. The 2-hour window around low tide is ideal for beach wheelchair access.

Assuming all ADA hotel rooms are equal

You booked "accessible" but the room has a tub, no roll-in shower. The bathroom door doesn't fit your chair.

βœ“ Call the hotel directly. Ask specific questions: roll-in shower? grab bars? turning radius? Door widths?

Not bringing shade gear because "we'll stay in the water"

Beach wheelchairs don't have umbrellas. You're exposed to full sun. Heat exhaustion risk is real.

βœ“ Bring a beach umbrella, pop-up shade, or tent. Position it where you'll be. Hydrate constantly.
