  • Focus on the horizon, take deep breaths
  • Drink small sips of water or ginger ale

Common Fishing Trip Mistakes

Booking a full-day trip first time

8+ hours is brutal if you get seasick or bored. Kids especially lose interest.

Fix: Start with a half-day (4-5 hours). If you love it, book full-day next time.

Skipping seasickness medication

Once you're sick on the water, there's no cure. Trip ruined.

Fix: Take Dramamine even if you've never been seasick. Ocean swells are different.

Not bringing cash for tips

Awkward moment at the dock. Mates work hard and depend on tips.

Fix: Bring $20/person for party boats, 15-20% of charter fee for private trips.

Wearing wrong shoes

Boat decks get wet and slippery. Flip-flops are dangerous.

Fix: Wear non-slip boat shoes or old sneakers with grip. No flip-flops.

Not asking about what's included

Surprise costs: fish cleaning, rod rental, bait - can add $30-50.

Fix: Ask before booking: gear included? Bait? Fish cleaning? Cooler needed?
