NJ Hurricane Season Tips

Best Hurricane Spots

Manasquan jetty (offshore wind), Spring Lake (clean glassy lineup), Long Branch beachbreak, Cape May Cove (smaller but reliable). Avoid IBSP — too remote.

Surf Forecasting

Surfline NJ forecast + Magicseaweed give 5-10 day hurricane swell windows. Best windows are usually 1-2 days out before the storm hits NJ landfall (or after, if it stays offshore).

Safety First

Hurricane swell can mask rip currents. Don't paddle out alone; respect lifeguard restrictions; turn back if conditions look beyond your level. Plenty of NJ surfers drown chasing too-big swell.

Photography Reality

Stormy NJ days produce the best dramatic shore photography of the year. Bring rain cover for camera. Cape May Cove and Manasquan jetty produce portfolio gold during nor'easters.

FAQs

When is NJ hurricane swell season?

September-November. Peak weeks: late September to mid-October. The Atlantic hurricane season runs through November but NJ-impactful storms cluster in September-October.

Is NJ surfing hurricane swell dangerous?

Yes for inexperienced surfers. Waves can be 6-10+ ft, with offshore winds creating perfect-but-powerful conditions. Don't paddle out unless you've been surfing 2+ years and know the spot.

What's the difference between hurricane swell and regular fall swell?

Hurricane swell has longer period (12-15 sec vs 6-8 sec). Cleaner waves, more power, more rideable shoulders. Forecasters distinguish the two; check Surfline before assuming.
