NJ First-Lesson Tips

Best Surf Schools

Brave New World (Asbury Park), Eastern Lines (Belmar), Aqua East (Cape May). All include board + wetsuit. $80-120 for 2-hour group lesson.

When to Book

Mid-summer (July-August) has smallest most-forgiving NJ waves. Spring (June) waves slightly bigger. Fall (Sept-Oct) is for intermediate-up only β€” too punchy for first-timers.

After the Lesson

Most schools offer "rent your board" packages for $20-30/day after a lesson. Try the sport for a week before buying.

Etiquette Reality

After your lesson, don't paddle out at busy NJ surf spots without knowing right-of-way. Asbury beach break is forgiving; Manasquan jetty break is not. Match spot to skill.

FAQs

How much does a NJ surf lesson cost?β–Ό

$80-120 for a 2-hour group lesson at Brave New World, Eastern Lines, or Aqua East. Private lessons run $150-200. All include board + wetsuit.

Best age for first surf lesson?β–Ό

8+ for kids comfortable in water. 10+ for adults learning seriously. NJ summer wave is forgiving enough that any age can take a lesson β€” most schools accept ages 6+.

What should I wear under a wetsuit?β–Ό

Bathing suit + rash guard. The rash guard prevents wetsuit chafing on neck/shoulders. Some surfers go bare under; the rash guard is more comfortable for first-timers.
