Cape May Bird Observatory is one of the East Coast's top migration spots. Fall (September-November) brings 100,000+ raptors, hundreds of warblers and shorebirds. The right gear separates beginners from people who actually see the birds.

Tested across NJ birding seasons β€” Cape May fall migration, Brigantine summer shorebirds, Sandy Hook winter ducks. The 4-item kit covers all three.

NJ Birding Tips

Cape May Hawk Watch

Late September to early November is peak. Mid-day is best (thermals lift raptors). Cape May Point State Park is the official watch site.

Brigantine NWR

Forsythe NWR (Brigantine division) is the NJ shorebird capital. Spring (April-May) and fall (August-October) bring biggest concentrations. 8-mile auto-tour route accessible by car.

Tide Timing Matters

Shorebirds concentrate at low tide on exposed mud flats. Use NJ tides hub to plan visits 1-2 hours before low tide.

eBird Reports

Check eBird before going β€” recent rare-bird sightings are reported in real-time. Cape May has the most NJ activity year-round.

FAQs

When is best for NJ birding?β–Ό

Fall migration (September-November) for raptors, warblers, sparrows. Spring (April-May) for shorebirds and warblers. Winter for ducks and geese. Summer is the slowest birding season.

Do I really need 8x42 binoculars?β–Ό

Yes β€” 7x35 is too small (less light), 10x42 is too narrow (harder to track moving birds). 8x42 is the established standard for shorebirds and migration. Don't go below.

Where can I learn NJ birding?β–Ό

Cape May Bird Observatory offers free walks September-November. NJ Audubon Society chapters host monthly walks. eBird and Merlin Bird ID are free apps that accelerate learning.
