SPF 30 = blocks 97% UV. SPF 50 = blocks 98%. Above SPF 50 is marketing — diminishing returns. SPF 30-50 is the sweet spot.
40-min or 80-min water resistant. Reapply after that window. NJ ocean swims void any "all-day" claim — reapply every 2 hours.
Mineral sunscreens leave white cast unless tinted. "Sheer" or "tinted" formulas blend better but cost more. Plain white is fine for kids.
Lotion = best coverage, slowest. Spray = fast, easy to miss spots. Stick = great for face and quick touch-ups. Most beach-goers need 2 forms.
Kids need higher zinc (≥20%), lower SPF (30 sufficient). Look for "broad spectrum" and "tear-free" labels.
