Cape May Cove, Avon-by-the-Sea, Spring Lake South, Avalon all have gentle surf and shallow entries. Avoid Long Branch and Sandy Hook for first-timers — bigger waves.
Beach umbrellas all look alike. Set a meet-up landmark (jetty, lifeguard chair number) on arrival. Tell kids to find a lifeguard if separated.

For Sandy Hook, IBSP, or any soft-sand walk-in, yes. A folding wagon (Mac Sports or similar) saves you 4-5 trips. For boardwalk-adjacent beaches like Cape May or Wildwood, the wheeled cooler is enough.
A first-aid kit. Kids step on shells, get stung by jellyfish, scrape elbows. A $15 waterproof beach first-aid kit handles 95% of incidents. The other 5% is when you go to a lifeguard.
