Inflatable vs Hardshell SUP | The Honest NJ Buyer Guide

Inflatable packs into your trunk and lives in a closet. Hardshell glides faster but eats your garage. Which one wins for Barnegat Bay glass?

Inflatable SUPs revolutionized paddleboarding for apartment-dwellers and trunk-of-the-Subaru paddlers. Hardshells still glide faster and feel more like a real board. The right choice for the Jersey Shore depends on whether you have a garage, a roof rack, and a 12-foot driveway.

Tested across NJ flatwater β€” Barnegat Bay glass at sunrise, Cape May Harbor at slack tide, Wildwood inlet, and a back-bay flounder hunt off Stone Harbor.

SUP Tips for the Jersey Shore

Best Spots

Barnegat Bay, Manasquan River, Cape May Harbor, Wildwood inlet, Sandy Hook back-bay. Avoid the Atlantic Ocean unless you have a SUP-surf board and 5+ years of experience.

Tide Timing

Slack tide is your friend. Paddle 30-60 min after high or low tide for the smallest current. Use the tide times in our /tides hub.

PFD Required

NJ + USCG require a PFD on board for SUP paddlers (not necessarily worn, but on the board). Adult life jacket β€” see our water safety guide.

Inflatable Storage

Don't store inflatable SUPs fully pumped in 90Β°+ heat β€” pressure builds. Deflate to 50% if you leave it in a hot car or shed.

FAQs

Are inflatable SUPs as good as hardshells?β–Ό

For 90% of NJ recreational paddling, yes. Modern high-pressure inflatables (15+ PSI) are nearly as rigid as hardshells. The remaining 10% β€” racing, surf, distance touring β€” still favors hardshells.

How long does it take to inflate a SUP?β–Ό

8-12 minutes with the included hand pump (most boards). 3-5 minutes with an electric pump (worth the $80-130 add-on if you paddle weekly).

Can I leave my inflatable SUP inflated long-term?β–Ό

Short trips (a week, indoors at room temp) yes. Long-term storage at full pressure or in heat damages the seams. Let it down to 30-50% if you're storing more than a week.
