Do you need a car for your trip?

Honest answer: not always. If you are staying in Asbury Park, Long Branch, or Belmar and sleeping near the train station, NJ Transit covers you. The moment your plans include Long Beach Island, most of Cape May County, or more than one town, the math flips.

The other case is flying in. Every airport below has rental counters, and for most arrivals the rental is the only practical way to reach the beach.

PHLPhiladelphia International1 - 1.5 hours

Drive times are without traffic. Summer Fridays and Saturdays add 30-60 minutes on every route.

The seasonal pricing pattern

Memorial Day - Labor Day

Book when you book the room. The small counters (ACY, TTN, in-town offices) sell out of the cheap classes weeks ahead of summer weekends, and walk-up rates at the big airports climb all season.

September - May

Inventory is loose and rates drop. Off-season is also when a car matters most — the seasonal buses and trolleys stop running, but the boardwalks, lighthouses, and winter beaches are still there.

Renting mid-trip, in town

Came down by train and changed your mind? Rental offices operate in and around the bigger shore towns — Toms River, Atlantic City, and Rio Grande near the Wildwoods are the usual pickups. Inventory is a fraction of an airport counter, so book a day or two ahead rather than walking in.

A one-day mid-trip rental is often the right size: drive the day trip, return it, and skip a week of parking.

Car rental FAQs

Do I need a car at the Jersey Shore?

It depends on the town. Northern towns on the NJ Transit Coast Line (Asbury Park, Long Branch, Belmar) work car-free if you stay near the station. Everywhere else — Long Beach Island, most of Cape May County, and any trip that hops between towns — is far easier with a car.

Is it cheaper to rent at the airport or in town?

Airport counters usually have larger inventories and more competition, which often beats the small in-town offices on price — but airports add concession fees. Compare both before booking; the gap swings either way by season.

When should I book a rental car for a summer shore trip?

As early as you book the room. Summer weekend inventory at the smaller counters (ACY, TTN, in-town offices) genuinely runs out, and the cheapest car classes go first.

Which airport has the easiest car pickup for the shore?

Trenton-Mercer (TTN) if Frontier serves your city — the counter is steps from baggage claim. Atlantic City (ACY) is similar for the southern shore. Newark (EWR) and Philadelphia (PHL) have the most inventory but bigger facilities and longer lines.
