How do I check beach water quality before my visit?
Our water quality ratings are based on NJDEP monitoring data measuring Enterococcus bacteria levels. Green/Excellent ratings (below 35 CFU/100mL) indicate very safe swimming conditions. Check our beach water quality page for detailed station reports.
What do beach flag colors mean in New Jersey?
Green = Calm conditions, safe swimming. Yellow = Moderate conditions, exercise caution. Red = Dangerous conditions, swimming not recommended. Purple = Marine life hazard (jellyfish, etc.). Double red = Beach closed. Flag systems vary by town.
When are Jersey Shore beaches least crowded?
Weekday mornings (Tuesday-Thursday) are typically the least crowded. Arriving before 9 AM on weekends helps. September after Labor Day offers great weather with minimal crowds. Check our beach cams for real-time crowd estimates.
What is the best ocean temperature for swimming?
Most people find 65-75°F comfortable for swimming. Jersey Shore ocean temps range from 55-60°F in early June to 70-75°F in August. The warmest water is typically late July through mid-August.
