Waretown is the kind of bay town that rewards a slower pace. The unincorporated heart of Ocean Township, it sits on the western shore of Barnegat Bay where the Pine Barrens meet the water, and most of life here still revolves around that waterfront. Local marinas like Key Harbor put boaters and anglers within easy reach of the bay's flats and channels, and Sands Point Park draws a steady crowd to its public boat ramp, fishing pier, and fish-cleaning station. Crabbing off the docks is practically a summer institution.
The town's history runs deep. Ocean Township was carved out in 1876, and Waretown itself takes its name from the Ware brothers who settled the area; in the captain's era of the 1700s and 1800s, bayfront lots were prized by shipbuilders and schooner crews. You can still trace that past at the Little Red Schoolhouse Museum on Wells Mills Road, kept by the local historical society.
Inland, Waretown holds two of Ocean County's quiet headliners. Wells Mills Park is the largest park in the county, roughly 900 acres of cedar swamp and Pine Barrens trails wrapped around a lake, with a nature center and canoe rentals. And the Albert Music Hall keeps the Pinelands music tradition alive every Saturday night with live bluegrass, country, and old-timey folk. Out on the bay, look toward the small sandy patch known as Kite Island on a breezy summer afternoon and you'll usually spot kitesurfers launching off the water. Waretown has no ocean beaches of its own; Long Beach Island and Island Beach State Park fill that role a short drive away. But for bay fishing and a slower pace, it's worth the stop.
