Accessibility Tips

Reserve Beach Wheelchairs Early

Availability is limited. Reserve 1-2 days ahead in peak season.

Ask About Ride Transfers

Most rides require transfer from wheelchair. Ask about specific requirements.

Call Ahead for Details

Accessibility varies. Call specific attractions to confirm your needs can be met.

Go During Off-Peak Times

Less crowded times mean easier navigation on boardwalks and in attractions.

Check Tide Schedules

Beach wheelchairs work best at low tide when sand is firmer.

Bring Assistive Devices

Some attractions may not have loaners. Bring what you need.

Accessible Trip Planning Checklist

πŸ“‹Before You Go

  • βœ“Call attractions to confirm accessibility features
  • βœ“Reserve beach wheelchair 1-2 days ahead
  • βœ“Check tide schedule (low tide = firmer sand)
  • βœ“Download accessibility maps for boardwalks

πŸŽ’What to Bring

  • βœ“Extra batteries for power wheelchairs
  • βœ“Portable ramp for curbs (if needed)
  • βœ“Cooling vest/fan for hot days
  • βœ“Sun protection - shade is limited on beaches

πŸ–οΈAt the Beach

  • βœ“Ask lifeguards about beach wheelchair locations
  • βœ“Request Mobi-mat routes if available
  • βœ“Know nearest accessible restroom location
  • βœ“Have a shaded backup plan for extreme heat

πŸ“„Documentation

  • βœ“Bring disability parking placard
  • βœ“Carry medical equipment documentation for TSA
  • βœ“Have emergency contact info accessible
  • βœ“Know nearest hospital/urgent care locations

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Planning an accessible trip takes extra research. Avoid these pitfalls:

Assuming "accessible" means the same thing everywhere

You arrive expecting full wheelchair access but find "accessible" just meant one ramp to the entrance. The rest of the attraction has stairs, narrow paths, or gravel.

βœ“ Call ahead and ask specific questions: "Can a power wheelchair navigate the entire facility?" "Are all exhibits at wheelchair height?" "What is the path surface?"

Showing up for a beach wheelchair on a busy Saturday without a reservation

Most beaches have 2-4 wheelchairs total. They're first-come-first-served or reservation only. You drove an hour to find them all checked out.

βœ“ Call the beach patrol 1-2 days ahead. Ask about availability and reservation policy. Have a backup beach in mind.

Planning a beach day at high tide

Beach wheelchairs don't work well in soft, dry sand at high tide line. You're stuck at the top of the beach, can't get near the water.

βœ“ Check tide charts. Plan for low tide when sand is wet and firm. The 2-hour window around low tide is ideal for beach wheelchairs.

Not accounting for boardwalk crowds in summer

July Saturday, 80,000 people on a 2-mile boardwalk. Wheelchair navigation becomes nearly impossible. Stress instead of fun.

βœ“ Visit weekday mornings or September/October when crowds thin out. Early morning (before 10 AM) is best for peaceful boardwalk access.
