Fishing Conditions FAQ

What water temperature is best for striped bass fishing?

Striped bass are most active in water temperatures between 55-68°F. The spring run picks up when waters reach 50°F, and the fall run is strongest when temps drop from 65°F to 55°F. They become sluggish below 45°F and above 70°F.

How do tides affect fishing at the Jersey Shore?

Moving water (incoming or outgoing tide) is generally best for fishing. The 2 hours before and after a tide change are often most productive. Slack tide (when the tide stops) typically slows fishing action. Many anglers prefer the last 2 hours of outgoing tide.

What are the best wind conditions for surf fishing?

Light onshore winds (5-15 mph from the east) can push baitfish toward shore and improve surf fishing. Strong offshore winds (west) flatten the surf but can push fish out. Days after a storm with churned-up water often produce well.

When is the best time of day to fish at the Jersey Shore?

Dawn and dusk (the "magic hours") are typically best due to low light and active feeding. However, tide timing often matters more than time of day. Night fishing can be excellent for stripers and bluefish, especially during summer.
