The Jersey Shore offers over 120 miles of coastline with marinas ranging from full-service luxury facilities near Atlantic City's casinos to working fishing village docks in Barnegat Light. Whether you're cruising the Intracoastal Waterway, need a transient slip for the weekend, or want to launch your own boat, you'll find the right spot here.

Most marinas operate seasonally from April through October, with a few year-round facilities in Atlantic City and Cape May. During peak summer weekends, transient slips can be hard to find—call ahead to reserve, especially at popular destinations.

Great Bay to the south provides wilderness boating through the Edwin B. Forsythe Wildlife Refuge. These protected waters are ideal for kayaking, crabbing, flounder fishing, and family boating adventures.

Seasonal Boating Guide

🌸

Spring (April-May)

Water temps 50-60°F, variable weather

  • Marinas reopening from winter
  • Spring striper run begins
  • Less crowded launch ramps
  • Great time for maintenance/detailing

Call ahead to confirm marina openings. Some fuel docks may have limited hours until Memorial Day.

☀️

Summer (June-August)

Water temps 65-75°F, calm conditions typical

  • Peak boating season
  • All marinas fully operational
  • Best weather for cruising
  • Offshore fishing peaks

Reserve transient slips 2-3 weeks ahead. Arrive at launch ramps before 6am on weekends. Watch for afternoon thunderstorms.

🍂

Fall (September-October)

Water temps 60-70°F, occasional nor'easters

  • Fall striper migration
  • Fewer crowds, better availability
  • Comfortable cruising weather
  • Reduced transient rates

Best value for marina stays. Watch weather closely—fall storms can develop quickly. Great fishing.

❄️

Winter (November-March)

Water temps 38-50°F, winter storms

  • Many marinas closed or limited
  • Boat winterization services
  • Dry storage available
  • Planning time for next season

Only a few marinas operate year-round (Farley State, South Jersey Marina). Ice can form in back bays.

Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) in New Jersey

The Atlantic ICW runs through New Jersey from Manasquan Inlet (Mile Marker 0) to Cape May, offering protected passage through Barnegat Bay, Little Egg Harbor, and the back bays of South Jersey. This stretch is popular with snowbirds heading south in fall and returning north in spring.

Key Stops

  • • Point Pleasant (MM 0)
  • • Beach Haven/LBI
  • • Atlantic City
  • • Ocean City
  • • Cape May (end of NJ ICW)

Channel Depths

  • • Maintained to 6-8 feet
  • • Watch for shoaling outside markers
  • • Barnegat Bay averages 6ft
  • • Check ActiveCaptain for current conditions

Bridge Clearances

  • • Several bridges require opening
  • • Contact on VHF Channel 13
  • • Fixed bridges: 55ft+ clearance
  • • Check tide levels for clearance

Pro Tip: South Jersey Marina in Cape May is the last major stop before crossing Delaware Bay. Stock up on fuel and provisions here, especially if heading south on the ICW.

Marina & Boating Tips

Transient Docking

  • • Call ahead for availability, especially in summer
  • • Have your boat registration and insurance ready

  • • Use the staging area to prep, not the ramp

Safety Essentials

  • • File a float plan with someone on shore
  • • Check weather before departing
  • • Life jackets for all passengers
  • • Working VHF radio (Channel 16)
  • • First aid kit and flares
  • • Know the "rules of the road"
