About Cape May Lighthouse

The Cape May Lighthouse is one of the oldest operating lighthouses in America, still guiding ships with its original 1859 Third Order Fresnel lens. This 157-foot tower offers stunning sunset views from the Cape May Point State Park, making it a must-visit destination.

History

The current Cape May Lighthouse is the third to stand at this location. The first (1823) was destroyed by erosion, and the second (1847) also succumbed to the advancing sea. The current tower was built in 1859 and has withstood over 165 years of coastal storms.

What makes Cape May special is that it still uses its original Third Order Fresnel lens - one of the few lighthouses in America where you can see an antique lens in operation. The lens was manufactured by Henry-Lepaute of Paris.

The lighthouse was automated in 1946 and continues to serve as an active aid to navigation. The surrounding Cape May Point State Park was established to protect this historic treasure.
