Weakfish (also called sea trout or weakies) were once the most abundant gamefish in NJ waters. Though populations declined significantly, conservation efforts are showing promise. Catching a quality weakfish today is a special accomplishment and a glimpse at the fishery's potential future.

🐟 Conservation Note

Weakfish populations have been recovering but remain far below historic levels. The strict 1-fish limit reflects ongoing conservation efforts. Many anglers practice catch-and-release to help rebuild the population. Handle fish carefully and release them quickly to maximize survival.

Weakfish Fishing Tips

Fish the low light

Weakfish are most active at dawn and dusk. The hour before sunrise and after sunset are prime feeding times. Night fishing can also be productive.

Use light tackle

Weakfish have soft mouths that tear easily. Use light drag settings and dont horse them in. Let the rod do the work.

Work grass edges

Weakfish cruise the edges of grass flats looking for shrimp and small fish. Cast parallel to the grass line and retrieve slowly.

Try bucktails with grubs

A white or chartreuse bucktail tipped with a soft plastic grub is deadly on weakfish. Bounce it along the bottom slowly.

Fish moving water

Like most gamefish, weakfish prefer moving water. Fish the first few hours of incoming and outgoing tides for best action.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time for weakfish fishing in NJ?

Spring (May-June) is the prime weakfish season in NJ when fish move into the bays to spawn. Fall (September-October) also sees good action as fish move south. Dawn and dusk are the most productive times.

What are the NJ weakfish regulations?

NJ weakfish regulations require a 13-inch minimum size and 1 fish per angler daily bag limit. This conservative limit reflects efforts to rebuild the weakfish population which has struggled in recent decades.

Where is the best weakfish fishing in NJ?

Delaware Bay is legendary for weakfish, particularly around the bay mouths and creek channels. Barnegat Bay, the back bays behind LBI, and the Navesink/Shrewsbury rivers also hold weakfish during their runs.

What bait works best for weakfish?

Live shrimp is the #1 weakfish bait. Soft plastic shrimp imitations, bucktails with grubs, and small swimming plugs also work well. Weakfish have soft mouths, so use light drag and gentle hook sets.

Why are they called weakfish?

Weakfish get their name from their tender, easily torn mouths - not from a lack of fighting ability. They are also called sea trout, though they are not related to freshwater trout.

Are weakfish good to eat?

Weakfish are excellent eating with delicate, sweet white flesh. However, with the 1-fish limit, most anglers practice catch and release to help the population recover. When you do keep one, eat it fresh.
